With over 150 million speakers throughout 33 countries, Russian is the eighth most common first language in the world. It plays an important role particularly in Eastern Europe and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

From 1917 through to 1991, it was the official language of the entire Russian Empire. Although each of the 15 Soviet republics had its own working language, Russian was the language of government and economy. Today, despite attempts to discourage Russian by several of the newly independent states it has held on to its role as the unifying language throughout much of Eastern Europe.

Unlike English which uses the Latin alphabet, Russian is written with the Cyrillic alphabet. When computers were first introduced, Russian was often transliterated into the Latin alphabet due to the unavailability of Cyrillic keyboards. For example, “мороз” (meaning frost) would be transliterated into “moroz”. However modern encoding developments now enable users to type Russian characters even on western 'QWERTY' keyboards, so transliteration has become less common.

Did you know? To say an informal goodbye in Russian, you say “poka”, while “hi” is said “priviett”.
