In South America, Portuguese is the mother tongue of approximately 182 million Brazilians. There are 13 regional dialects in use throughout the country, all of which are mutually intelligible. Since the 1960’s, television networks based in the southeastern cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have dominated Brazilian culture, making the dialects of that region into the standard for mass communication throughout the country.
Despite its European origins, Brazilian Portuguese differs in many aspects from the language spoken today in Portugal. A more archaic form of Portuguese, it varies in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Both native and African influences have made their way into Brazilian Portuguese, and today it borrows many words from English and French. "Rugby", "band-aid" and "mouse" (for computer mouse) are all English words that have been adopted into the language.
Brazil is a growing marketplace for international businesses. Entreprenurialism is high, and in 2010 the Brazilian economy surpassed Italy’s as the world’s seventh largest. With its booming population and burgeoning middle class, it’s not hard to imagine why so many companies require expert translation services to reach the Brazilian market.
Did you know? “Um beijo!” (a kiss!) and “um abraço!” (a hug!) are common ways to end a friendly email in Brazil.
