English to Korean • Korean to English
Close to 80 million people around the globe speak Korean as their mother tongue. The official language of both North and South Korea, it is also widely spoken in neighbouring parts of China. Furthermore, many expatriate communities continue to use Korean as their day-to-day language including large groups in the former Soviet Union, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan and the Philippines.
Along with its many linguistic differences from English, the Korean language also reflects differences in culture. For instance, Korean makes frequent use of honorifics to indicate varying levels of politeness or respect, while English tends to be more egalitarian. It is particularly important to take these cultural nuances into account when translating to ensure that the target audience is spoken to appropriately and effectively.
The written Korean language uses “Hangul”, the Korean alphabet. Hangul is a phonetic system and combines letters into blocks of 2 to 5 characters to represent words. Until the 1980’s Korean was generally written from right to left in vertical columns. Since then, writing from left to right in horizontal lines (as is English) has become popular, and today the majority of texts are written this way.
Did you know? The shapes of Hangul vowels are based on three elements: man (a vertical line), earth (a horizontal line) and heaven (a dot).
