In common use by up to seven million Israelis today, Hebrew was once virtually extinct as a spoken language. While spoken Hebrew flourished from approximately 10,000 BC to 7,000 BC, it gradually became replaced by the Aramaic tongue. Hebrew managed to survive centuries of disuse due to its religious significance and place in ritual, prayer and literature.
In the late 19th century, spoken Hebrew was reborn along with the rise of Zionism. In 1913 Hebrew became the language of instruction in Jewish schools in Palestine and in 1948 it became an official language of the new state of Israel. The revival of spoken Hebrew was largely due to the efforts of a single man, Eliezer ben Yehudah, who devoted his life to the cause.
Hebrew is written from right to left in an alphabet consisting of 22 consonants. There are no vowels, as practiced Hebrew speakers can understand the written language without these pronunciation aids. However, to aid learning, there is a system of dots and dashes that sit above or below the consonants. Called “nikkud”, these are generally only used in specialised texts such as dictionaries, poetry, and texts for children or new immigrants.
Did you know? The Hebrew alphabet is often referred to as the “alefbet” after its first two letters, “alef” and “biet”.
