With close to 100 million native speakers Europe-wide, German ranks ahead of both French and English as the most common mother tongue in the European Union. It is the primary language spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, as well as select regions of Italy, Belgium, France and Denmark.
While French, Italian and Spanish are considered ‘Romance’ languages, both English and German belong to the Germanic family. In fact, English originally developed as a variety of West Germanic approximately 2,500 years ago. English and German started to diverge around about 200-700 AD into “Old English” and “High German”. As these historic cultures grew and developed, these dialects evolved into the modern languages we recognise today.
The German language is heavily promoted by the German government in order to retain its key role in European culture, politics and economics. The government-backed Goethe Institut teaches language classes and hosts German arts and cultural events across the globe. There are 149 “Instituts” around the world today, including one each in Melbourne and Sydney.
Did you know? There are approximately 110,000 German speakers living in Australia.
