In 2009 French was the 16th most spoken language in the world. It is spoken as a first language by approximately 70 million people – over 60 million of whom live in France.
From the 1600’s to the mid-1900’s, French was the foremost language of diplomacy and international affairs in Europe, as well as the most popular language among the educated elite. The dominant position of French has only recently been surpassed by English, largely due to influences from English speaking “new world” countries like the United States.
To protect its language, France has introduced laws designed to promote the use of French and minimise the adoption of Anglicisms. The Toubon Law, introduced in 1994, mandates the use of French in commercial advertisements and government publications. This means all ads and public announcements must be delivered in French. However, for advertisements created in a foreign language, it is sufficient to provide the French translation in a footnote which has become common practice today.
With its widespread use and strict protection rules, its essential that translations into French are carried out correctly and appropriately for the destination region.
Did you know? French is an official language in many African countries, including Benin, Burundi, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda and Togo and more.
