Chinese Translation Service

English to Chinese • Chinese to English

Over 1.2 billion people in the world speak “Chinese”. This is in fact an umbrella term for a huge number of languages, many of which are mutually incomprehensible. The official written languages are Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

Since 1912, Mandarin has been the national language used throughout mainland China. It forms the basis of written Chinese and is the official language used in education, the media and formal situations. Known as a tonal language, Mandarin uses four distinct tones to clarify the meanings of words, which would otherwise sound the same. For example, the sound “ma” has four different definitions depending on pitch – mā for mother, má for hemp, mǎ for horse or mà for scold.

Other widely spoken Chinese languages include Cantonese (in Hong Kong, Taiwan and many expatriate communities around the world), and Hakka (in Southern China).

Particular care must be taken with Chinese translations due to the language’s many written and spoken complexities. At Blue South, we carefully select translators who are experienced in your industry, so they fully understand your subject matter. Using the appropriate written and spoken language, their skilled translations can help you tap into the vast Chinese market.

Did you know? Chinese is written using tens of thousands of distinctive characters called “ideographs” which have no relation to the sound of a word.
