Canadian French Translation Service
English to Canadian French • Canadian French to English
Canadian French is the frequently used umbrella term for all of the varieties of French used in Canada.
Over one fifth of the Canadian population speaks French as their first language. Although a few different dialects co-exist, “Quebec French” is the most widely spoken. It is the day-to-day language in the province of Quebec and is also common in the neighbouring provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick.
Because Canada is officially bilingual, the federal government is required to provide both English and French versions of their services and communications. In Quebec, all product labelling, commercial documentation, signage and software language needs to be made available in French. To save the cost of producing both English and French versions of their communications, many companies simply create bilingual solutions that incorporate both languages.
Whilst there are similarities between Canadian French and the French language spoken in Europe the differences are such that it is necessary to have separate translators.
Did you know? While a European-based speaker’s “oui” (meaning yes) sounds roughly like “wee” to the English ear, a Quebec French speaker’s “yes” sounds more like “way.”
