Translations for the Asia-Pacific region

Did you know? Chinese and Japanese are considered some of the most difficult languages for Westerners to learn due to their markedly different pronunciation, structure and writing systems.

According to the encyclopedic reference work, the Ethnologue, there are 2,322 living languages in Asia. Most of these languages are far less interrelated than their European counterparts. For instance, Chinese and Japanese have few linguistic connections, although Japanese does use some Chinese characters in its writing system. A number of Asian languages are written using adaptations of Chinese characters while others use phonetic scripts and some, like Vietnamese, have adopted the Latin alphabet.

With so many written and spoken complexities, it’s clear to see that Asian languages require highly skilled translators. These experts must first be able interpret your documents correctly and then find the appropriate language to convey information to the target audience. Beyond linguistic accuracy, cultural differences must also be taken into account to ensure effective and appropriate translation.

Our most

frequently requested languages in the region are Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

How do we translate place names?

Our clients’ documents often include place names, such as Sydney, Uluru and Barossa Valley. For the Asia-Pacific region, these names are translated by choosing the characters which result in the best phonetic translation – that is, they match the sound of the name. Care must be taken to make sure that the characters selected, each of which comes with its own meaning, do not combine to create a negative or silly word.

For Asian-based translators who are unsure about pronunciation of a particular place name we do a final proofing in Australia to ensure the translation is correct.
